After a historic collapse, Wemby still believes the Spurs can win the NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs are facing elimination in the NBA Finals after losing Game 4 to the New York Knicks with a score of 107-106. The loss puts the Spurs down 3-1 in the series, meaning they must win three consecutive games to win the championship. The New York Times reported that the Spurs blew a 29-point lead in the fourth quarter of Game 4, which featured a record-breaking comeback. Despite the deficit, Spurs players maintain confidence in a comeback. Victor Wembanyama stated on Friday that the team believes they can win and emphasized the need to take the series one game at a time. Guard De’Aaron Fox noted that the team believes they have a chance because they have seen teams recover from 3-1 deficits in the past. Fox added that the Spurs are focusing on winning the upcoming Game 5 in San Antonio rather than looking at the series as a whole. The team is currently managing several issues leading into Game 5. Wembanyama was reportedly targeted by fans who threw eggs at him outside the team hotel in New York following the Game 4 loss. Wembanyama stated that while the incident was not good, it does not bother him. Also, coach Mitch Johnson expressed concern regarding Wembanyama’s exhaustion after playing 44 minutes in Game 4, though Wembanyama stated he does not believe fatigue will be a factor with two days between games. Coach Johnson attributed the Game 4 loss to a decline in urgency and substitution patterns during the third quarter. He has faced criticism for in-game management, specifically regarding a defensive alignment on the Knicks’ final possession. While some have suggested a minutes restriction for Wembanyama, Johnson stated he does not intend to use one. The Spurs are aware that only one team in NBA history has recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the finals, but they are noting that the current series has been statistically closer than that historical example.
