Oklahoma attorney general recommends Big 12 sanction Texas Tech over Brendan Sorbsy case
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has formally recommended that the Big 12 sanction Texas Tech following a court order that restored the athletic eligibility of quarterback Brendan Sorsby. In a letter sent Friday, Drummond stated that Texas Tech has acted in a manner adverse to the conference and the integrity of college football. He dismissed claims that such sanctions would violate antitrust laws, asserting that the conference is simply upholding its bylaws to ensure fair play. The recommendation follows a temporary injunction issued on Monday by a Texas state court in Lubbock County. The ruling reinstated Sorsby’s eligibility for the 2026 season, effectively overruling the NCAA’s permanent ban. The NCAA had deemed Sorsby ineligible for committing thousands of gambling violations, which included wagering more than $90,000 and placing at least 40 bets on his own team while attending Indiana in 2022. According to the injunction, Sorsby will serve a two-game suspension. The conference is currently navigating conflicting legal pressures. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Sorsby’s lawyer, Jeffrey Kessler, sent letters to the Big 12 on Thursday warning that any sanctions against Texas Tech or Sorsby would be considered “unlawful” and met with legal action. In response, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark stated that the league is consulting with legal counsel to understand the state’s concerns before meeting with the full Board next week. While Texas Tech officials stated the university was not involved in Sorsby’s lawsuit against the NCAA, they have publicly supported his eligibility. The school noted that Sorsby completed a month-long inpatient treatment program and will continue to receive support. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors expressed strong opposition to Sorsby playing for the Red Raiders during his final season, with some suggesting the conference not play against Texas Tech if he does.
