U.S. cruises past Paraguay 4-1 in World Cup opener

The U.S. Men’s national soccer team defeated Paraguay 4-1 in their FIFA World Cup opener on Friday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The victory places the U.S. At the top of Group D, which also includes Australia and Turkey. The U.S. Is scheduled to face Australia next on June 19 in Seattle. The U.S. Established dominance early, scoring first in the 7th minute on an own goal by Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla. According to AP News, the goal resulted from a pass by U.S. Midfielder Weston McKennie deflecting off Bobadilla. Striker Folarin Balogun then scored twice for the U.S.: first in the 31st minute following a cross from Christian Pulisic, and again during first-half stoppage time. Balogun’s brace is the first by a U.S. Player since the 1930 inaugural tournament. Paraguay midfielder Mauricio scored the South American side’s only goal in the 73rd minute. The U.S. Added a fourth goal in the second-half stoppage time with a strike from winger Gio Reyna, who entered the match as a late substitute. CBS News noted that the U.S. Attack showed significant improvement compared to the 2022 World Cup, where the team scored only three goals across four matches. The match was held before an attendance of 70,492 fans. CBS News reported that the crowd included many who paid thousands of dollars for tickets. The U.S. Last hosted the men’s World Cup in 1994. This tournament marks the first time the event has been co-hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and the first time it has been played across North America since 1994.
