U.S. Men’s National Team makes World Cup debut

The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) begins its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign tonight with an opening match against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, at 9 p.m. ET. The tournament marks the first time the event has returned to the United States in 32 years, with the country serving as a co-host alongside Canada and Mexico. The USMNT is currently in Group D and is scheduled to face Australia in Seattle on June 17 and Turkey in Inglewood on June 25. According to NonStop Local Billings, the top two teams from each group, plus the eight third-place teams with the most points, will advance to the round of 32. If the U.S. Wins its group, it will host a round of 16 match in Santa Clara on July 1; if it finishes as a runner-up, that match will be held in Dallas on July 3. The squad, which Fox News has dubbed the “Golden Generation,” features several established stars. Christian Pulisic, who plays for AC Milan, is highlighted as a key figure tasked with delivering a historic result on home soil. Other notable players include striker Folarin Balogun of AS Monaco, midfielder Weston McKennie of Juventus, and captain Tim Ream of Charlotte FC. Ream told CBS News that while the team faces the responsibility of playing for 330 million people, he believes they have the potential to win. The team is led by head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who was appointed in 2024. Former U.S. Player John Harkes told the BBC that Pochettino has put the team on the right track and noted that the current squad possesses better resources and experience than previous iterations. While the U.S. Reached the last 16 in the 2022 World Cup, their best historical performance was a third-place finish in 1930.
