Wemby, Spurs still believers, even while down 3-1 to Knicks in NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs face a 3-1 series deficit against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, needing to win three consecutive games to avoid elimination. The Spurs recently became the first team in NBA Finals history to lead a game by 29 points and still lose, a feat they accomplished in Game 4. Despite this, Victor Wembanyama stated on Friday that the team remains confident, emphasizing a need to focus on one game at a time rather than worrying about the remaining series. The Spurs have held leads in the fourth quarter of all four games played so far. While they won Game 3 by four points, they lost Games 1, 2, and 4 after holding significant leads. In Game 1, they led by 14 points and lost by 10; in Game 2, they led by 12 and lost by one; and in Game 4, they held a 29-point lead before losing by one. The Spurs are seeking to become only the second team in NBA Finals history to rally from a 3-1 deficit, a feat previously achieved by the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers. Wembanyama, who has averaged 27.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks through four games, acknowledged the difficulty of shaking off the Game 4 loss but stated the team is moving forward. The team has also dealt with external incidents, including reports of fans throwing eggs at Wembanyama outside the team hotel in New York. Wembanyama stated that while the incident was “not good at all,” it does not bother him. Coach Mitch Johnson noted that Game 4 showed a waning of urgency and a slip in substitution patterns during the third quarter. While Johnson mentioned the need to manage Wembanyama’s energy to finish games strongly, Wembanyama stated he does not believe exhaustion will be a factor with two days between games. The Spurs will host the Knicks for Game 5 on Saturday at the Frost Bank Center.
