Qatar 1-1 Switzerland: World Cup 2026 – as it happened

The 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup began on June 11, featuring a tournament spread across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. In the opening match in Mexico City, Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0. The following day, the United States defeated Paraguay 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, while Canada drew 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. The U.S. Victory was highlighted by a multi-goal performance from Folarin Balogun, who scored twice to become the first American player to record multiple goals in a World Cup match since 1930. Balogun’s first goal came in the 31st minute following a pass from Christian Pulisic, and his second was scored in first-half stoppage time. Other U.S. Goals included a 7th-minute own goal by Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla and a 79th-minute strike by Gio Reyna. Christian Pulisic was substituted out at halftime, while Balogun was substituted in the 71st minute. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino described the squad as “amazing” following the win. In Group B, Qatar and Switzerland drew 1-1 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Qatar, the reigning AFC Asian Cup holders, earned their first point of the tournament with a goal by Boualem Khoukhi in injury time. The teams are joined in the group by Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The tournament features 104 matches in total, with 78 scheduled to be played in the United States. Broadcasting rights for the U.S. Games are held by FOX and NBCUniversal, with FOX airing 40 primetime matches. Every match will be available in Spanish on Telemundo and Universo. The group stage concludes on June 27, with the knockout stage beginning on June 28.
