Thunderstorms threaten Trump's UFC cage fight on the White House lawn

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is scheduled to hold its first-ever professional sporting event at the White House on Sunday, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and Flag Day. The event, part of celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary, will feature a seven-bout card on the South Lawn. Approximately 4,300 people are expected at the invite-only event, with an additional 85,000 anticipated at a nearby fan zone. The UFC spent about $60 million on the event, which includes the installation of “The Claw,” a 600-tonne metal structure. Weather conditions may impact the proceedings. The National Weather Service has warned of “damaging thunderstorms” with a 70% chance of rain, potential lightning, and wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. Temperatures are expected to hover around 80°F with humidity exceeding 70% during the 20:00 EDT start time. A news conference for the event at the Lincoln Memorial was briefly delayed on Friday due to inclement weather. The event faced legal challenges from the Public Integrity Project, which filed a lawsuit arguing the fights were “deeply corrupt” due to the UFC’s financial ties to Trump and a lack of approvals for a nearby weigh-in. A judge denied an emergency injunction on Friday, a move the White House described as dismissing a “frivolous” lawsuit. While administration officials have praised the event, a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that only 16% of Americans believe it is appropriate to hold the fight at the White House. Simultaneously, President Trump is preparing to attend a G7 summit in France to discuss global issues, including the conflict with Iran. While Trump stated on social media that a peace deal involving the Strait of Hormuz was “scheduled to get signed” Sunday, Iranian officials expressed doubt regarding that specific timing. Trump also indicated the deal would involve the elimination of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.
