World Cup what to know: Canada earns a hard-fought draw in opener, U.S. is up next vs. Paraguay

Canada earned a 1-1 draw in its World Cup opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto. Bosnia-Herzegovina took an early lead in the 21st minute with a header by Jovo Lukic. Canada fought from behind for the majority of the match before Cyle Larin scored in the 78th minute to equalize. According to the Associated Press, Canada had lost all of its previous six World Cup games before this draw. The United States, currently ranked 17th by FIFA, is scheduled to play Paraguay in Inglewood, California. Paraguay is the lowest-ranked team in Group D at No. 47 and is returning to the tournament for the first time in 16 years. The U.S. Team is led by coach Mauricio Pochettino, who was hired in 2024, and features forward Christian Pulisic. The tournament schedule will feature at least four games daily starting Saturday through June 27. Upcoming fixtures include Qatar vs. Switzerland, Brazil vs. Morocco, Haiti vs. Scotland, and Australia vs. Turkey. Mexico began the tournament on Thursday with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in Mexico City. Broadcasting for the tournament in the U.S. Is handled by Fox, with English matches on Fox or FS1 and Spanish matches on Telemundo and Universo, with streaming available on Peacock and the Fox One app. Also, the head of the Palestinian Football Association, Jibril Rajoub, is currently in Mexico City awaiting permission to enter the United States, as he is among several accredited individuals who have been denied or have not yet received U.S. Visas.
