11 skydivers and pilot killed in US plane crash

A plane crash in Missouri on Sunday killed 12 people, including 11 skydivers and one pilot. The aircraft crashed near the Butler Memorial Airport in Bates County, located approximately 50 to 65 miles south of the Kansas City metropolitan area. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft was a Pacific Aerospace P750 (or P750XL) that crashed while departing the airport. The plane was leased by the skydiving company Skydive Kansas City. The FAA stated that air traffic services were not being provided at the time of the incident. Bates County Emergency Management officials reported that the plane took off around 11:20 a.m. Local time on Sunday. The aircraft failed to gain altitude, made a sharp left turn, and crashed about 200 yards away from the airport. Dennis Jacobs, the acting airport manager and Bates County Emergency Management Agency director, stated the plane landed in a field adjacent to the airport, caught fire, and was “brutal.” Jacobs suggested the plane may have been losing power and stalled, while Missouri Highway Patrol Sergeant Justin Ewing reported that emergency responders received a call regarding a plane engulfed in flames around 11:30 a.m. First responders checked the area under the flight path and did not find any skydivers who may have jumped before the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. The airport serves approximately 30 privately owned aircraft. While the Pacific Aerospace 750XL is a model popular for skydiving, it is also used for cargo, aerial surveying, and medical evacuation. Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti noted that skydiving companies are governed by the same rules as private plane owners rather than the more stringent rules for charter flight operators or airlines.
