A Lebanon town's grief in the aftermath of a deadly Israeli airstrike

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues to cause significant casualties and destruction in Lebanon. According to the Lebanese health ministry, Israeli strikes have killed more than 3,700 people in the country. In the village of Deir Qanoun al-Nahr, an Israeli airstrike on May 19 killed 13 people, including four women and six children, which NPR reported as one of the largest civilian losses in a single strike in three years. The strike also destroyed a medical center and damaged a nearby mosque. In southern Lebanon, the Israeli military issued forced displacement orders on Sunday for 29 locations, including the towns of Jbaa, Houmin al-Tahta, Ansar, and Kfar Sir. Residents in these communities were told to flee north of the Zahrani River immediately. Also, the Israeli military announced it killed senior Hezbollah commander Ali Musa Daqduq in a strike south of the Litani River on Friday. The IDF also reported conducting a strike in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut against Hezbollah infrastructure in response to projectiles fired toward northern Israel. Simultaneously, the situation in Gaza remains volatile. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that the Palestinian death toll from the Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 73,000. While a fragile ceasefire is in place, both sides have accused each other of violations. Progress on reconstruction and troop withdrawals remains stalled due to a deadlock over the disarmament of Hamas. Amidst these developments, President Donald Trump stated on social media that a deal to end the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran will be signed tomorrow, which would reopen the Strait of Hormuz. While Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed optimism regarding the deal, Iranian state media reported that officials do not expect a signing on Sunday, though one might occur in the coming days. Iranian officials have stated that the situation in Lebanon is an integral part of these negotiations.
