The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship since 1973 after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5. The victory concluded a series in which the Knicks led 3-1 going into the final game, following a historic comeback in Game 4 where they won 107-106. This marked the team’s first NBA Finals appearance since 1999. The win took place at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. While the arena quickly cleared of Spurs fans after the final buzzer, New Yorkers celebrated at watch parties across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that a championship parade will be held in Manhattan this Thursday. Knicks owner James Dolan expressed his apology for the long wait for a title, while Finals MVP Jalen Brunson joked in a postgame interview about trying to appear on “SVU.” High-profile fans were present in San Antonio to witness the victory. Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller, Spike Lee, and Tracy Morgan were among those in attendance, with Chalamet telling ESPN’s SportsCenter that the win was “way rather this than the Oscars.” Other notable figures in San Antonio included Sydney Sweeney, Scooter Braun, and several other celebrities. Many other fans, including Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, and Jon Stewart, celebrated the win from home or via social media. Mariska Hargitay, a close friend of Brunson, attended the Game 4 comeback in person and later posted a tribute to the team on Instagram. She described the game as “the greatest night of my life.” also, both former President Barack Obama and current President Donald J. Trump issued congratulations to the team. Other notable reactions included Bruce Springsteen, who ended a performance at the Tribeca Festival with “Go Knicks,” and the Empire State Building, which was lit in orange and blue.
