Australia demands answers after girl taken hostage is shot dead by Pakistan police

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on Pakistani authorities to conduct a transparent and proper investigation into the fatal shooting of a nine-year-old Australian girl while she was on holiday with her family. Hania Ahmed, a student from Perth, was killed on June 10 in the northern city of Chakwal in Punjab province. According to the BBC, the family was taken hostage at gunpoint by armed robbers inside their rental car. Punjab police stated that the suspects fired at a police officer, leading to a shootout. The police reported that an officer “mistakenly” fired his gun, believing the suspects were fleeing in the family’s vehicle, resulting in the girl’s death and wounding her father and older brother. However, the girl’s father told SBS Urdu that the police fired first. Al Jazeera reported that the Punjab Police Elite Force personnel mistook the family for armed thieves during the chaos. The outlet identified the father as 39-year-old Adeel Ahmed and the brother as 11-year-old Aafan, while noting the mother escaped unhurt. Al Jazeera also stated that the officer involved has been remanded in custody, and the two robbery suspects were killed in a separate shootout. The girl’s school principal in Perth described the news of her death as “traumatic” for the community and noted that students in her class are in a state of shock. The Australian government is currently providing consular assistance to the family. Punjab police stated there was “absolutely no justification for deviating from our established protocols” and that they are conducting a “thorough and impartial investigation.”
