Former American businessman detained in Myanmar after alleged financial misconduct

The former president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar, Adam Castillo, was detained at Yangon International Airport upon his return to the country on Thursday. Castillo, who served as the organization’s president from 2023 to 2025 and is the owner of the security risk management firm AGS Myanmar, was reportedly arrested following a complaint filed by the chamber. According to reports from outlets close to the Myanmar military, the investigation involves suspicious financial transactions. The chamber’s May 29 annual report states that the current board uncovered suspect transactions undertaken by former board representatives. The report alleges that a former representative signed a contract in November 2024 with a Washington-based public relations firm, resulting in a $300,000 payment that was reportedly collected and disbursed outside of the chamber’s accounts. The report notes that the signature exceeded individual signing limits, the board never approved the agreement, and the chamber received no funds, payments, or services. The U.S. State Department confirmed it is aware of the detention of an American citizen but declined to comment further due to privacy considerations. Castillo’s company, AGS Myanmar, described the situation as an “ongoing matter” and declined further comment. The Myanmar government and regional authorities have not issued official statements. Castillo, a former U.S. Marine officer, was seen on Instagram attending a business forum in Kuala Lumpur the day before his arrest. He is also the chair of “Republican Overseas Myanmar,” an organization established in 2024 to promote “America First policies” in the region. He recently released a memoir titled “Finding Our Voice,” which recounts his experiences in Myanmar following the 2021 military takeover.
