Hurricanes use stifling defense to win the Stanley Cup

The Carolina Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup championship in 20 years on Sunday, June 14, 2026, by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final in Las Vegas. The Hurricanes’ defense was noted for shutting down the Golden Knights, who went 18:37 between shots on goal during the second and third periods of the final game. This marked the first time the Golden Knights were shut out in their three Cup final appearances. Carolina center Jordan Staal received the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Staal, who previously won a title with Pittsburgh in 2009, scored in each of the first five Cup final games. Taylor Hall scored just 3:47 into Game 6, and Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal. Brandon Bussi recorded his first career playoff shutout by stopping 22 shots, while Jackson Blake recorded a goal and an assist. The series was characterized by significant momentum shifts. After falling behind 4-0 in Game 3, the Hurricanes rallied to force overtime. Following that game, Carolina won the next two matches to move within one victory of the championship. The Hurricanes held Vegas to five total goals in Games 4 and 5 before securing the shutout in Game 6. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who captained Carolina to a 2006 title, will have his name on the Cup for the second time. The Golden Knights, who reached the final after sweeping Colorado to win the West, faced several lineup changes in the final game due to the do-or-die situation, including Brett Howden replacing the injured William Karlsson. CBS News noted that the team’s management will have to decide whether to keep head coach John Tortorella for next season.
