Knicks fans set bus alight during celebrations
The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years on Saturday night, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The victory marked the franchise’s third title in its 80-year history, joining previous championships won in 1970 and 1973. The Knicks rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second quarter to secure the win, with Jalen Brunson scoring 45 points to be named Finals MVP. Brunson’s performance set a Knicks record for points in a finals game. The win provided the New York City area with its first major professional championship across the big four North American team sports leagues since the New York Giants won Super Bowl XLVI in 2011. Following the game, fans celebrated across the city at bars, outdoor watch parties, and kiosks. Fireworks were reported over Brooklyn and Central Park, and fans gathered outside Madison Square Garden. However, celebrations in Times Square were marked by violence and mayhem. According to the Associated Press, tens of thousands of people filled the streets, where some clashed with police, smashed windshields, and climbed onto scaffolding and school buses. Police reported that a 17-year-old was shot near 42nd Street and Broadway around 2 a.m., and a school bus used for World Cup transportation was set on fire. Other buses and five police cars were also damaged. A total of 63 people were arrested on charges including assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. Knicks owner James Dolan urged fans to stay safe and be responsible during the celebrations. Mayor Zohran Mamdani also issued a social media message calling on residents to be smart and look out for one another. The city is scheduled to officially celebrate the championship with a parade and City Hall ceremony on Thursday.
