Smiles all around as Morocco, Brazil share spoils and Knicks make history
On Saturday, the New York New Jersey Stadium hosted a World Cup 2026 group-stage match between Brazil and Morocco, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Morocco took an early lead in the 21st minute when Ismail Saibari scored with a scooped shot. Brazil equalized 11 minutes later when Vinicius Jr. Scored into the top right corner. While Morocco controlled much of the possession, Brazil pressed for a winner in the second half, including a late chance by Lucas Paqueta that was pushed away. Morocco nearly scored in added time, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou blocked a follow-up shot. Brazil will next face Haiti, while Morocco faces Scotland. The football match was attended by more than 80,000 fans. Supporters arrived at the Secaucus train station in New Jersey, where some faced a $98 return fare from New York or New Jersey. Brazil fans, who expected a win for the five-time world champions, were described by Al Jazeera as appearing disappointed by the draw, while Morocco supporters suggested the result indicated their team could reach the final. Following the football match, sports attention shifted to Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 to win their first championship since 1973. The Knicks won the best-of-seven series 4-1, overcoming a 29-point deficit in game four to achieve the biggest comeback in Finals history. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 45 points, setting a Finals record for the team and earning Finals Most Valuable Player honors. Celebrations for the Knicks’ victory occurred in both New York and San Antonio. In New York, the Empire State Building was lit in orange and blue, and fans gathered at bars and outdoor watch parties. In San Antonio, a blue and orange-clad contingent cheered at the Frost Bank Center, where Prince Harry and NBA commissioner Adam Silver were among the spectators.
