The New York Knicks Just Did the Impossible
The New York Knicks secured their first NBA championship since 1973 after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 on Saturday. Led by Jalen Brunson’s 45 points, the Knicks won the series 4-1. The victory took place at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, where the arena was mostly full of Spurs fans who cleared out following the final buzzer. The championship win drew a significant celebrity presence in San Antonio, including longtime fans Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller, and Tracy Morgan. Chalamet was seen hugging star Karl-Anthony Towns and told ESPN’s SportsCenter that the win was “way rather this than the Oscars.” Stiller, who wore a 2026 NBA Champions t-shirt, described the win as “pretty amazing.” Other notable figures photographed in attendance included Prince Harry, Sydney Sweeney, Scooter Braun, and Dave Chappelle. Various other stars, including Adam Sandler, Jay-Z, and Taylor Swift, were also spotted during the finals. Karl-Anthony Towns’ fiancée, Jordyn Woods, attended Game 5 with a lucky orange purse. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter prior to the game, Woods described the atmosphere in New York as a “one-of-a-kind experience” that brought people together. She stated that she and Towns were living “moment by moment” and had not planned specific celebrations. Following the win, Knicks owner James Dolan expressed his apology to New York for the length of time it took to secure the title. The Knicks’ path to the championship included a historic comeback in Game 4, where they won 107-106 after trailing by 29 points at halftime. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that a championship parade will take place in Manhattan this Thursday. Also, both former President Barack Obama and current President Donald J. Trump congratulated the team on their victory.
