Trump hosts UFC cage fight on the White House lawn

President Donald Trump is hosting the first-ever professional sporting event at the U.S. Presidential residence this Sunday, featuring a seven-bout Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) card on the White House South Lawn. The event, arranged between Trump and UFC president Dana White, coincides with Trump’s 80th birthday, Flag Day, and celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. Approximately 4,300 invitees are expected on the lawn, with an additional 85,000 anticipated at a nearby fan zone. The UFC spent roughly $60 million on the event, which includes $700,000 for post-event grass repairs. The venue features a 92-foot-high, 600-tonne metal structure called “the Claw.” The main card will feature a fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje and will be streamed exclusively on Paramount+. Administration officials have praised the event, with Trump calling it “the greatest show on Earth” and Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing the UFC as a tool for “American soft diplomatic power.” The event faced a legal challenge from the Public Integrity Project, a law firm representing two Virginia residents. The lawsuit argued the event was “deeply corrupt” due to President Trump’s ties with Dana White and a lack of approvals for a weigh-in at the Lincoln Memorial. A judge denied the emergency injunction on Friday, a move the White House characterized as dismissing a “frivolous” lawsuit. However, a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated public skepticism, finding that 46% of Americans believe the event is inappropriate, while only 16% believe it is appropriate. Weather conditions may impact the proceedings, as the National Weather Service has forecast temperatures near 80°F with humidity exceeding 70% and a 70% chance of “damaging thunderstorms” with potential wind gusts over 50 mph. The UFC fight is part of a series of marquee events for the country’s 250th anniversary, which will also include a “Great American State Fair” in July and an IndyCar race around the National Mall later this summer.
