Watch: Protesters clash with police ahead of G7 summit in Geneva

Protesters and police clashed in Geneva during a demonstration against the upcoming G7 summit. According to the BBC, police deployed tear gas and a water cannon to disperse a large crowd after protesters smashed windows and set a car on fire. One protester expressed disappointment at the violence, stating the message was regarding countries that “oppress us through money and power.” The G7 summit begins on June 15 in the French resort town of Évian-les-Bains, bringing together leaders from Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, and the European Union. Al Jazeera reports that thousands gathered in Geneva on Sunday, led by the “No-G7” coalition, which includes environmentalists, feminist activists, and Palestinian rights advocates. A spokesperson for the coalition expressed fear regarding the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump and other G7 leaders, citing concerns over war and the planet’s safety. Al Jazeera further noted that demonstrators denounced the G7 as a “club of wealthy nations” that does not represent the global population. The report highlighted that while the G7 previously accounted for 70 percent of global GDP, that figure has shrunk to 40 percent. Also, Al Jazeera reported that a flotilla of approximately 20 boats appeared on Lake Geneva on Saturday displaying anti-G7 and pro-Palestinian banners. To prepare for the summit, Swiss and French authorities have deployed thousands of police, blocked off roads, and banned unauthorized gatherings. Al Jazeera reported that many local businesses have boarded up storefronts as a precaution against upheaval.
